Anyone can sign up to become a
United Airlines MileagePlus member, but this earns you few benefits. Instead, you’ll want to achieve Premier status as part of United’s MileagePlus program to begin receiving benefits. Premier status includes multiple tiers with an increasing variety of benefits, such as upgrades and complimentary bags. However, the higher tiers are also more restrictive, with higher requirements for flights taken and the amount you spend with United Airlines.
Like most frequent flyer programs today, United’s MileagePlus is now a spend-based frequent flyer program. While there is a minimum flight requirement, eligibility for the various Premier status tiers is based on how much you spend with United, rather than how much you fly with the carrier. There are four main tiers (Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, Premier 1K), each with higher restrictions and better rewards. In addition, each tier comes with reciprocal benefits with Star Alliance.
How To Achieve Premier Silver Status
Premier Silver is the entry-level elite tier for United MileagePlus. To qualify for all Premier statuses, customers must take at least four flights with United or United Express. Status can be achieved through a combination of Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) and Premier Qualifying Points (PQP). Premier Qualifying Flights are essentially a full flight operated by United, United Express, or a partner airline. In the case of connecting itineraries, each segment counts as a PQF.
PQP is earned from the base airfare and carrier-imposed surcharges, at a rate of one PQP per US dollar. In addition, PQP can be earned by using United-sponsored Chase credit cards. The United Club cards earn one PQP for every $15 spent, while all other cards earn one PQP for every $20 spent. In 2026, Premier Silver status can be achieved with 15 PQF and 5,000 PQP, or 6,000 PQP. If you earn Premier status, you maintain your status for the rest of the year and for the following calendar year.
Premier Silver status-holders are entitled to a complimentary checked bag when traveling in economy. You receive complimentary access to Economy Plus seats at check-in for yourself as well as one companion, and you’ll board the aircraft in Group Two. In addition, you earn seven miles for every dollar spent on United flights, and you are eligible for free day-of-departure upgrades. Furthermore, all Premier status-holders receive Premier Access services on the ground and are routed to the Premier Priority Desk when calling customer service.
What Do You Get For Premier Gold Status?
Premier Gold status slots above Premier Silver, but below Premier Platinum. It features many of the same benefits as Premier Silver, including Premier Access on the ground, being routed to the Premier Priority Desk over the phone, as well as free flight changes within 24 hours of departure. Furthermore, Mileage Plus Premier Silver and Gold members receive Avis Preferred Plus status for rental cars, bonus miles on car rentals, extra benefits at United Hotels VIP Access properties, and free onboard amenities on select United Cruises.
One benefit for Premier Gold that’s lacking for Premier Silver members, however, is free Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status. In economy, Premier Gold members are permitted two free checked bags. All Premier status-holders can access dedicated security lanes at select airports, but Premier Gold members board in Group One. You’ll earn eight miles for every dollar spent on United flights, and receive complimentary access to Economy Plus when booking for yourself as well as a companion. You’ll also be placed on the upgrade list 48 hours before departure, and you receive reciprocal benefits with certain partner airlines.
To be eligible for Premier Gold, you must meet the minimum requirement of taking four flights with United or United Express. In 2026, Premier Gold can be reached by earning 10,000 PQP and flying on 30 PQF, or by earning 12,000 PQP. This is double the requirements for Premier Silver. Not only does Premier Gold grant you the aforementioned benefits, but it also rewards you with Star Alliance Gold membership, which is also standard for higher Premier tiers. Premier Silver members are only given Star Alliance Silver membership.

Alaska Airlines is making it easier to achieve elite status, as well as adding new benefits.
Looking At MileagePlus Premier Platinum
Premier Platinum is the second-best status tier in the United MileagePlus Premier group. You’ll notice that so far, for each tier, United ups the PQP and PQF requirements by 5,000 PQP and 15 PQF, or by 6,000 PQF. This is the case for Premier Platinum as well; in 2026, MileagePlus members need to earn 15,000 PQP and complete 45 PQF, or earn 18,000 PQP. Naturally, the four-flight segment minimum still applies here as well. While you still only receive Star Alliance Gold (as
Star Alliance does not have a higher loyalty tier), Premier Platinum comes with several new benefits otherwise.
Premier Platinum members earn nine miles for every dollar spent on United flights. Once again, you receive complimentary Economy Plus seating at booking, but this is now also available for eight companions. You receive $100 off of an annual United Club membership, three free checked bags when flying in economy, and you’ll be placed on the complimentary upgrade list 72 hours before departure. Of course, you also receive Premier Access on the ground and board in Group One.

Premier Platinum introduces a new premium currency called « PlusPoints« . You are given 40 PlusPoints when reaching Premier Platinum, and they can be exchanged for more miles, additional PQP, or to request upgrades. PlusPoint upgrades are set at a fixed rate, with variances primarily stemming from the type of upgrade you’re attempting to make. This contrasts with the dynamic pricing that you see for standard award tickets, where the price with miles is directly correlated to the cash price.
United MileagePlus Premier 1K Status
Premier 1K is the highest status that most people can earn with United Airlines. For Premier 1K, the additional PQP needed is higher than the premiums for the other statuses. In 2026, Premier 1K can be achieved with 60 PQF and 22,000 PQP (7,000 additional PQP over Premier Platinum), or with 28,000 PQP (10,000 additional PQP over Premier Platinum). Furthermore, if you fly over one million miles with United, you receive Premier status for life (Gold for one million, Platinum for two million, 1K for three million, and Global Services for four million).
You earn 11 miles for every dollar spent on a United flight, and you’ll be added to the United upgrade list 96 hours prior to your departure. Rather than boarding with Group 1, Premier 1K members can preboard the aircraft. When flying economy, Premier 1K members receive a complimentary snack and beverage. Premier 1K members also receive discounts on CLEAR+ memberships and United Club subscriptions. Furthermore, Premier 1K members receive 280 PlusPoints.

With Premier Platinum, the PlusPoints can essentially only be used once or twice a year in many cases, but with 280 PlusPoints, Premier 1K members can utilize them on several more occasions throughout the year. Premier 1K members receive Avis President’s Club status (also granted to Premier Platinum), and members of both tiers earn up to 1,250 miles per rental. Furthermore, Premier 1K members receive a complimentary subscription to Timeshifter – The Jet Lag App.
What About United Airlines’ Global Services Status?
Premier 1K is the highest status within United Airlines’ Premier tiers, but United also has its Global Services status, which is the highest frequent flyer status in the MileagePlus program. There are two ways to earn Global Services status: either by flying four million miles with United Airlines or by invitation. If you earn Global Services status by flying four million miles with United, you can also share this with a companion. However, the high threshold means that this is the less common pathway to earn Global Services status.
There are no officially published guidelines for receiving an invitation from United for Global Services, and it’s unknown exactly how many individuals currently hold this status. In addition, Global Services members need to qualify for this status every year. Of course, Global Services passengers are placed on upgrade lists 120 hours prior to departure, have access to special ground services, full United Club access, priority boarding ahead of any other passengers, and a dedicated Global Services hotline.
Global Services actually has three internal tiers, with most passengers being invited to the standard Global Services tier. In addition, there’s a second-tier Global Services status, and then the United Chairman’s Circle. Little details are known about what these upper tiers offer passengers, or what exactly qualifies passengers for these statuses. The Chairman’s Circle was inherited from Continental Airlines, and it’s believed that there may be fewer than 50 members of the Chairman’s Circle.
