The Airlines With The World’s Best On-Time Performance In 2025

On-Time Performance has evolved from a simple ground-level metric used by airlines into one of the aviation industry’s ultimate benchmarks for operational excellence. Far more than a mere statistic, airlines recognize that OTP serves as a critical engine for passenger loyalty and ultimately, profitability. It is also crucial for mitigating costs, as even a single minute saved during aircraft turnaround can save an airline millions of dollars annually in freed capacity and reduced hidden expenses.

Airlines with high OTP scores increasingly use it in their marketing as a way of differentiating themselves. Delta Air Lines, for example, has managed to separate itself from the competitive pack in the US through consistently communicating its leadership in OTP. The annual Cirium On-Time Performance Review has become a landmark dataset for the industry. The aviation analytics firm has just released its full report for 2025, so let’s look at the airlines that are leading the pack.

How Cirium Calculates OTP Data

Now in its 17th year, the Cirium On-Time Performance Review analyzes flight data from over 600 real-time sources, including airlines, airports, global distribution systems, and civil aviation authorities. An independent advisory board of aviation industry veterans provides oversight and guidance.

Cirium defines an on-time arrival as when a passenger aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time, and an on-time departure is when a passenger aircraft departs the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled departure time. On-time arrivals are used to rank airlines, and on-time departures are used to rank airports.

These definitions and calculations have remained consistent from year to year, so that OTP can be tracked by airline or airport over the course of time. It also means that current performance can be benchmarked against prior years.

For the Global Airlines category, Cirium considers the top 10% of all passenger airlines by capacity and volume criteria, namely Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs), flights and seats. The airline must also serve at least three regions in order to be considered ‘global.’ For the second year in succession, Aeromexico came out on top, being the only global airline with an on-time arrival rate greater than 90%.

In 2024, Aeromexico delivered an 86.7% on-time performance across nearly 197,000 flights, but, in 2025, it elevated its performance to 90.02%, with each month holding close to or above the 90% level and no extended periods of decline. February reached nearly 93%, and the consistently strong results through the autumn months reinforce not a single award year but a pattern of sustained and repeatable operational excellence. Mike Malik, Chief Marketing Officer at Cirium, said:

« We congratulate the entire Aeromexico team on earning back-to-back Global On-Time Performance titles. The achievement highlights a commitment to operational excellence that benefits passengers, strengthens competitiveness, and sets a standard for the global airline industry. »

While Aeromexico took home the gold medal, it was two other SkyTeam carriers that received the silver and bronze. Saudia retained second place amongst the global carriers for a second year in a row with a marginally higher on-time percentage, and it was SAS that made some of the greatest strides. Indeed, the carrier rose from ninth in 2024 to third in 2025 courtesy of a 5% increase in its on-time performance.

While not large enough to make the ‘Global Airlines’ category, South Africa’s FlySafair achieved the best OTP of any airline with 91.06%, making it the leader in the Middle East & Africa region. The airline has performed consistently well in Cirium’s rankings, and has built up a reputation for precise scheduling, use of real-time data, and rapid 30-minute turnarounds, as befits its low-cost business model. Alongside this, FlySafair makes extensive use of built-in contingency planning.

Another regional highlight is Iberia Express, which took the title as Europe’s most punctual carrier for the third year in succession. With its parent, Iberia, making the top 10 in the Global Airlines category, the Spanish airline group and IAG have reason to celebrate. Similarly, Copa Airlines made it back-to-back wins in the Latin America category, even coming out in front of the eventual winner of the Global Airlines category within its region.

Meanwhile, Delta slipped from third in the Global Airlines category last year to tenth this year, primarily due to the massive operational disruptions caused by the government shutdown in the US, which the carrier says will cost it more than $200 million. However, it was still able to hold on to its title as the top carrier for on-time performance in North America, beating arch-rival United Airlines by two points.

The Platinum Award: Qatar Airways

Each year, Cirium also provides a Platinum Award for on-time performance, which goes beyond just measuring on-time arrivals to consider operational complexity, network scale, passenger impact during disruptions, recovery capability, and consistency throughout the year. Delta won the Platinum Award for four years in succession from 2021, but in 2025, Cirium gave the award to Qatar Airways, which delivered 84.42% on-time performance in 2025 under Cirium’s methodology.

This was up from 82.83% in 2024 across approximately 200,000 flights. That improvement matters because it came on top of an already strong base, while maintaining a completion factor close to 100%. For an airline, improving OTP when it’s already in the 80s is harder than moving from the 70s, as there’s less margin for gains, and the operational discipline required is tighter. The scale context also makes the numbers more meaningful.

Inded, the carrier operates a tightly banked hub at Doha Hamad International Airport serving over 170 destinations, running long-haul and multi-stop journeys across multiple regions and time zones. Each connection bank multiplies operational risk because aircraft positioning, crew availability, passenger flows, and ground services all must align. Keeping delays and cancellations low in that environment requires precision that most network carriers struggle to maintain.

Most Improved Airline: Virgin Atlantic

New in 2025, Cirium introduced an award for the ‘Most Improved Airline’ in on-time performance. This distinction recognizes carriers that have demonstrated marked improvement in on-time performance compared to the previous year. To ensure the award reflects substantive operational advancement rather than improvement from a low initial baseline, eligible airlines are required to have achieved at least 70% on-time performance in the preceding year.

The inaugural award went to Virgin Atlantic, which had the largest operational performance gain among global carriers. The UK-based airline improved its on-time performance from 74.02% in 2024 to 83.45% in 2025, a nearly 10% increase year-over-year.

In 2024, Virgin Atlantic didn’t even qualify for the top 20 ranking in the Europe region. However, this year, the airline secured fourth position in Europe, and delivered an OTP that was on-par with the top 10 global carriers. Philippine Airlines came in second place for the award with a 7% increase in OTP, while Turkish Airlines came in third with a 5.8% increase. The latter was undoubtedly assisted by the strong performance of its primary hub in the airports category.

Istanbul Takes The Platinum Airport Award

Cirium also utilizes on-time departures data to rank the performance of airports across the globe. In 2025, Latin America took the honors in all three airport categories: Large (25 million+ annual passengers), Medium (15–25 million) and Small (5–15 million). Santiago’s Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport was ranked as the top-performing large airport, with 87.04% of flights departing on time.

Meanwhile, Panama’s Tocumen International Airport won the Medium Airport category, with 93.34% of flights departing on time. Ecuador’s Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport claimed the Small Airport title for the second year in a row, with 91.47% of flights departing on time.

Cirium also provides a Platinum Airport Award, which recognizes broader operational excellence rather than just raw punctuality. The award went to Istanbul Airport in 2025, recognized for its operational complexity in a year in which it became Europe’s busiest airport with over 84 million passengers across 330 destinations and 116 airlines. Cirium highlighted Istanbul’s innovation as it implemented triple independent runway operations in 2025 to increase capacity to 148 movements per hour.
