United Airlines is set to connect San Francisco to the South Australian city of Adelaide, with flights to take off from the Golden Gate city on Thursday, December 11. The route will operate seasonally three times a week.

The service to Adelaide will become United’s fourth Australian gateway from SFO, already offering non-stop flights to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne year-round. This will be the first time a non-stop service has connected Adelaide to the United States, and it will be the only airline to provide non-stop services to four different ports in Australia.

Three Flights A Week

United will operate the seasonal service with its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which will shuttle travelers nonstop from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Adelaide Airport (ADL), the largest city in the state of South Australia. The nearly 15-hour flight will provide passengers with the quickest route from the US to popular tourist hotspots such as Kangaroo Island, the Eyre Peninsula, and the Barossa Valley.

Departing from SFO on a Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, the flight will push back at 11:05 pm, arriving in Adelaide at 9:30 am two days later after crossing the international date line. Return flights will leave Adelaide on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, pushing back at 2:55 pm local time, and arriving back in San Francisco the same day at 11:15 am.

The 787-9 will provide a total of 257 seats, including the popular United Polaris business class and Premium Plus premium economy cabins, alongside economy class. The South Australian airport celebrated the news back in April, when first announced, with the airport’s Managing Director, Brenton Cox, sharing below how important this route will be for ADL:

« Adelaide will now be connected directly to an entirely new continent – this is a core connection in our aviation network vision that has been decades in the making. This service will directly benefit business, investment, and our broader tourism economy. »

No More Stopovers En Route

Historically, those looking to travel to and from the United States to Adelaide have had to endure stopovers at other east-coast Australian airports such as Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. However, from Thursday, travelers will be able to enjoy the new non-stop service until the end of March 2026. This means travelers can now fly from destinations such as Chicago, Washington, Denver, and Seattle to Adelaide with just one stop.

Demand for the route from both sides of the Pacific is expected, with Adelaide travelers being able to make the most of not only visiting the San Francisco Bay area, but also connecting into the airline’s wider domestic and international network from SFO. The route to Adelaide will mark the airline’s sixth route to Oceania, complementing its existing Australian routes, including year-round services from Melbourne to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

It also has year-round flights from Sydney to San Francisco and Los Angeles, with seasonal services to Houston. Additionally, across the Tasman, United offers year-round flights to Auckland Airport, with seasonal services added to Christchurch Airport through the Southern Hemisphere summer season.

International Offering From Adelaide Airport

Adelaide is home to approximately 1.4 million inhabitants, representing the vast majority of South Australia’s 1.8 million residents. The airport, which is located just four miles (six kilometers) from the city’s CBD, served more than 8.7 million passengers in the 2024/2025 financial year. While the airport has lacked a non-stop connection to the United States, it has an extensive international offering to most major Asian and Middle Eastern airports, as detailed below.

Passengers traveling on the new United Airlines service to Adelaide will also be able to make the most of the airline’s code-share partnership with Virgin Australia. The deal offers seamless connections and onward travel throughout the airline’s wider Australian network from ADL. This includes non-stop flights to the likes of Alice Springs, Canberra, Perth, Hobart, and Launceston, alongside other trunk routes such as Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and the Gold Coast.
